Vikings, Cook Agree to Rookie Contract

The Vikings announced late yesterday that they’ve agreed to a rookie deal with their first pick of the 2017 draft, Dalvin Cook. While the post 2011 lockout rookie pay scale has made these sort of negotiations way less interesting (And life changing, for the players) it has limited the amount of lockouts in the league to next to zero, unless your name is Joey Bossa. So, with that, the Vikings and Cook agreed to terms a week after he participated in the first set of OTA’s this off-season.

Cook will be one part of the new Vikings backfield that includes free agent signing Latavius Murray and the now most veteran back on the team, Jerick McKinnon. Getting this formality out of the way will allow Cook and the Vikings to maximize their time together in the hopes that Cook can contribute as soon as possible to the team. While Adrian Peterson didn’t play last season, or the one before the one before that, his absence will still leave gigantic shoes to fill and while Cook is extremely talented, I don’t think Vikings fans have really begun to understand what they took for granted at the position. Thankfully, the Vikings have said that they essentially lucked out in getting Cook that late in the second round, so it’ll be nice to see what he can do once practices open up to the public.

All reports are that he’s been as good as was advertised so far this off-season, and considering his ability to catch passes out of the backfield, he should help implement an entirely new facet of the Vikings offense as well.
