The Vikings went into Sunday’s home opener in borderline must-win territory. After an 0-2 start, they couldn’t afford to dig themselves further into the NFC North basement, but they were going to have to do it without star RB Dalvin Cook.

Things got off to a rough start for the Vikings, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Russell Wilson was having his way throwing the ball, and DK Metcalf was using his size and speed to get open early and often. On Seattle’s opening drive, the duo connected for a touchdown, and the track meet began.

Kirk Cousins and the Vikings offense quickly matched that Seattle drive as Cousins and Tyler Conklin connected for the second touchdown of his four-year career, tying the game at 7-7. Conklin had himself a career day with seven catches for 70 yards.

The remainder of the first and start of the second quarter was all Seahawks, though. While the Vikings offense stalled on their second drive, Seattle continued moving the ball with relative ease. Jacob Myers made a field goal on their second drive, and Chris Carson took a 30-yard carry to the house, making the score 17-7 with 11 minutes left in the second.

From here on out however, it was all Vikings as Seattle would not score for the remainder of the game. Minnesota even had some kicker luck go their as Myers’ 37-consecutive made field goals streak came to an end. Cousins had an MVP-like day with Dalvin Cook on the sideline, passing for 325 yards and three TDs. In Cook’s absence, Alexander Mattison also stepped up in a big way. He had a career-high 169 yards from scrimmage while Justin Jefferson made his first touchdown reception in front of Vikings fans.

The second half was filled with long, methodical drives for the Vikings, and their three scoring drives all ended in field goals by Greg Joseph, who bounced back from last week’s debacle by making all six of his kicks. The Vikings rode a very strong defensive second half to a 30-17 win, and they officially got rid of their goose egg in the win column. Next week, the Vikings will host the Cleveland Browns as they try to even their record at 2-2.
