It wasn’t pretty. The critical 4th down play could have put Minnesota in a position to tie things. Unfortunately, the play was a complete mess. Perhaps the ugliest portion of things rested in Kirk Cousins trying to take the snap from his RG:

The whole Kirk Cousins attempted RG snap is kind of humorous if you can separate your sense of humor from the disappointment of yesterday’s loss. Watch Brian O’Neill. He is clearly confused as he stares at Kirk. Alexander Mattison, God bless him, even ran up to Kirk to try to shift him down to Mason Cole. What was Oli Udoh thinking in that moment? What was Mike Zimmer thinking in that moment?

Here is Cousins’ explanation: “I was just moving, trying to get everybody settled up and just got under the wrong guy.” The casual explanation makes it sound like this is something all QBs do from time to time. This is not the case.

To my mind, Cousins is the primary culprit behind yesterday’s loss, as I discussed over on Notes from the North. The RG snap isn’t a huge deal, it’s more so just a blooper for the Kirk Cousins end-of-career lowlights. What was more frustrating was seeing him miss Justin Jefferson on several occasions.

Moving forward, the Vikings will need Kirk to be significantly better. More often than not, he has been clutch. Facing the Lions will allow the team to get back on track. Integrate all the play makers and build some positive momentum heading down the stretch. Oh, and try to ensure the snap comes from the center.
