Urban Meyer Reminds Vikings Fans That It Could Always Be Worse

Seinfeld fans will likely recall an episode where George Costanza details his grand plan to get fired. To my mind, the most notable detail is when he drives through the Yankees parking lot with the World Series trophy dragging behind his vehicle, shouting that he fears no reprisal. Try as he might, George struggles to get fired.
Urban Meyer had no such difficulty with the Jaguars.
After less than a season, Meyer is out as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Urban Meyer news is a reminder to Vikings fans that things could always be much worse. The 2-11 record – though far from laudable – is the least of Meyer’s concerns. Here’s a brief recap:
- Lying about his reason to stay home following a TNF defeat. Instead of visiting family, he went to a bar so he could “[get] handsy with a woman in a Columbus bar”
- Get into a heated argument with veteran receiver Marvin Jones
- Reportedly accuse his assistant coaches of being losers before making them list their winning credentials
- Reportedly kicking Josh Lambo, a veteran kicker
- Have his rookie QB need to publicly state that the drama needs to stop for the Jags to succeed

Owner Shad Khan wasn’t shy about expressing his disappointment:
“After deliberation over many weeks and a thorough analysis of the entirety of Urban’s tenure with our team, I am bitterly disappointed to arrive at the conclusion that an immediate change is imperative for everyone,” owner Shad Khan said in a statement. “I informed Urban of the change this evening. As I stated in October, regaining our trust and respect was essential. Regrettably, it did not happen.”
Many Vikings fans are upset with head coach Mike Zimmer, but he looks like a coaching legend in comparison to Urban Meyer. Zim’s flaws mostly relate to the team’s performance on the football field. His Vikings have failed to find consistent success, waffling in between mediocrity and elite. At times, his vision for the team seems stale and inconsistent with the roster construction. It’s safe to say that Shad Khan and Jags fans everywhere would be thrilled to have these problems.
There are only 32 NFL head coaching jobs. Jacksonville isn’t anyone’s idea of a preeminent NFL franchise, and yet the fact remains that it’s one of 32. Getting a good head coach shouldn’t be impossible. Trevor Lawrence was supposed to be a surefire QB, someone who could turn the ailing franchise around. Perhaps a new head coach – someone with even a small amount of integrity and competence – can get the most out of Lawrence moving forward.
I, for one, am cheering for Lawrence to find success. It remains to be seen if he will. Until then, I’ll rest content that the Wilfs provide steady, strong leadership to the Vikings organization and that Mike Zimmer is a good coach, one who may just be getting to the end of his time with a franchise.
