The Wilfs and entire ownership crew have provided steady, strong leadership for the Vikings. It’s a main reason why future GMs and HCs will want to work in Minnesota.
Obviously, the main news from today rests in the decision to move on from Rick Spielman and Mike Zimmer. Mark Wilf addressed the media to discuss the franchise’s direction moving forward.
Mark Wilf confirmed that both the GM and HC hiring cycles will begin immediately, but that the GM would be chosen first. He also emphasized that he views the Vikings organization as being a very desirable spot to work. He articulated his desire to avoid a full rebuild because of the team’s “strong foundation.” Whenever he spoke of winning, it was notable that he consistently said “championships.” The plural is important.
He goes on to reiterate that they didn’t come to this decision in a quick manner. The Wilfs, as we’ve known for a while, are very thoughtful. They don’t make rash decisions. He emphasized that once the leadership is set, they’ll then turn to the roster and broader staff. It’s the wise move. They don’t want to meddle with the roster without having input from football experts (i.e. coaches and executives). Kirk Cousins is far from safe, but no decision will be made in the immediate future.
Part of what he continually reiterated was his desire for new leadership that could communicate well and work collaboratively with the other people in the building. The Vikings ownership group, quite evidently, has a clear vision for what they’re looking for.
Another thing that came across in his press conference was that the Vikings wouldn’t merely chase the trendy names. Obviously, there is some concern that it could take some time to figure things out since they need to replace both the HC and GM spots. Nevertheless, Minnesota seems content to take the time they need to hire the right people.
Thorough and deliberate were words that came up in his presser. This measured, thoughtful approach is the right way to go. Mark Wilf also said that they’d be searching everywhere for a new GM. The candidates won’t be constrained to simply their building or another area of the league. They’ll take an open-minded approach, looking everywhere for the right people.
He believes the Vikings can contend in 2022. There is the belief that the roster has some top-level talent, and it’s hard not to believe he’s discussing Justin Jefferson (among others). That should be an exciting statement for Vikings fans. Things move fast in the NFL. If the Wilfs nail these hires, the Vikings could be in the postseason as early as next season.
