The Pattern Holds As AP Signs With Seahawks

Kevin Williams, Sidney Rice, and Blair Walsh. Percy Harvin, Tarvaris Jackson, and Nate Burleson. All of these players were once Vikings before heading over to Seattle. The recent news about the agreement for AP to sign with the Seahawks is yet another instance.

Earlier in the year, Peterson signed with the Titans. The thinking was that he could provide a similar runner to Derrick Henry (who is hurt) insofar as he’s also someone with great size and a rugged running style. AP, of course, is far from Henry’s abilities at this stage, but the marriage made at least some sense from the outside looking in.

After three lackluster games – 27 carries, 82 rushing yards, and a TD – the Titans decided to move on from the future Hall of Famer.

The Seahawks are now bringing in the veteran RB to see if he can help their offense. I’ve often said that the Seahawks, in many ways, are the team the Vikings want to become. For the 2010s, they were consistently SB contenders, largely due to their run-first, defensive head coach. That approach has finally faltered during the 2021 season, but they’re one of the most impressive teams of the past decade. It’s this similar style that likely lends itself to many of Minnesota’s former players heading over to Seattle.

At nearly 37, Peterson’s best days are behind him. He has played for 6 teams in his career; Seattle will be the 7th. He’s close to surpassing the 15,000 rushing yards; he currently has 14,902. More impressively, Peterson is a league MVP, Offensive Rookie of the Year, 7-time Pro Bowlers, 4-time first-team All Pro, Offensive Player of the Year, and Comeback Player of the Year. He holds the record for most rushing yards in a single game; he nearly beat Eric Dickerson’s all-time season rushing record.

The decision to sign with the Seahawks offers AP the chance to continue accumulating individual stats. He’ll probably surpass the 15,000 yard mark, making him the 5th player to ever do so. Dickerson, LT, Jim Brown, Marshall Faulk, and several other all-time greats never surpassed that lofty total.
