The Mock Drafters Are Still Sending Derek Stingley Jr to Vikings

The Pro Day workout, in many people’s minds, ended the dream of seeing Derek Stingley Jr drafted by the Vikings. The recent piece on Vikings.com contradicts this belief. Several of the mock drafts feature Minnesota getting their man at #12.

Jordan Reid (ESPN), Todd McShay (ESPN), Peter Schrager (NFL.com), Kevin Hanson (MMQB), Ryan Wilson (CBS), Chris Trapasso (CBS), Pete Prisco (CBS), and Doug Farrar (Touchdown Wire) all have Minnesota picking the LSU standout. Take a peak at Schrager’s rationale:

Stingley recently received a clean bill of health, and that’s huge. Before the injury, he was widely viewed as a sure-thing top-10 pick. Having dominated at LSU his freshman season, he had the luxury of squaring off against Justin Jefferson (a future teammate?) and Ja’Marr Chase in practice, where he more than held his own. Who better to groom him than former LSU star and possible Pro Football Hall of Famer Patrick Peterson?

Schrager’s rationale is sound. There are connections aplenty, and don’t forget that Daronte Jones – who is currently Minnesota’s DB coach – was with LSU last year. The concern is that Stingley won’t last until 12th.

Other names commonly sent to Minnesota are corners Trent McDuffie and Ahmad Gardner. Jermaine Johnson is another name to consider. He’d get the chance to learn behind Za’Darius Smith and Danielle Hunter, taking on a rotational role that would hopefully allow him to thrive.

One has to think that the Vikings would love to draft Derek Stingley Jr. He has a high ceiling and he fills a position of need. He plays one of the most important positions and would be great value at 12th.
