The Full 2017 NFL Mock Draft (Complete with Trades)

The NFL Draft is almost upon us and what better way to celebrate than with a full seven round mock with trades. Each first round pick will get an explanation as well as where I have the player on my big board and any rumors I’ve had about that pick (as I try to decipher which are smoke and which have truth behind them).

Picks that have an asterisk next to the pick number indicate that it was acquired via mid-draft trade (trades are listed at the bottom).

Without any further adieu…

Round 1

Pick 1: Cleveland Browns – Myles Garrett, EDGE, Texas A&M
#1 Overall, #1 Edge Rusher

Does this pick really even need an explanation? Rumors have speculated about the Browns taking Trubisky here. They’re either false, or the Browns are ready to make one of the worst draft decisions for their franchise.

Pick 2: San Francisco 49ers – Jamal Adams, SS, LSU
#3 Overall, #2 Safety

I’ve heard three rumors here lately, and I think two of them are true. The first rumor is well known and documented and GM John Lynch said it himself (so it’s not really a rumor): the 49ers want to trade out of the #2 overall pick. It’s completely understandable that that’s what they want to do, I just don’t think they’ll find a suitor here (although the Browns have been rumored to be interested in moving up from #12 to #2). So if they don’t trade, who do they pick? Well, a story is going around saying that SF is prepared to take Mitch Trubisky at #2 and that is what the league expects them to do. Personally, I think it’s all smoke to scare Cleveland into trading up to #2 to insure they get Trubisky. The other info I’ve been hearing which has yet to be reported by any mainstream media (as far as I know), is that GM John Lynch, a former NFL safety, absolutely loves Jamal Adams. Whether that equates to Adams being the pick or not is up for debate, but a lot of times the GM gets his the player he likes, especially in the first round. That leads me to believe that if San Fran is forced to pick at #2, they will go with Jamal Adams over Soloman Thomas, Mitch Trubisky, or Jonathan Allen who are all considered to be in the running at #2.

Pick 3: Chicago Bears – Jonathan Allen, DE, Alabama
#4 Overall, #1 Defensive End (3-4)

This might surprise some as Allen has had shoulder issues lately and Watson has been the media’s darling pick here with the rumors that the Bears are going to take a QB at #3. I have a really hard time believing that and I also have info from an NFC scout that Allen likely will not make it past Chicago at #3 barring something dramatic. They are also rumored to like Adams at safety, so it wouldn’t surprise me if #3 is one of those two players.

Pick 4: Jacksonville Jaguars – Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU
#10 Overall, #1 Running Back

I almost went O.J. Howard here, and I could honestly see the Jaguars go in several different directions: QB, RB, TE, or even some defensive players. Fournette just seems like too good of a fit for Jacksonville to pass up (although they may be happy to just use T.J. Yeldon and Chris Ivory). Fournette provides a playmaker on offense to try and alleviate some of the pressure off of Blake Bortles, who hasn’t looked like the player that some thought he could be.

Pick 5: Tennessee Titans – Marshon Lattimore, OCB, Ohio State
#5 Overall, #1 Cornerback

Where do they go here. This is the first pick I truly struggled with for a good five to ten minutes. On the one hand, I do like Lattimore as a player, but his hamstrings worry me. So then do you go with his counterpart Gareon Conley (my second highest rated CB)? Or do you go elsewhere for a DB like Malik Hooker? No matter where they go here, it seems as if they are grabbing an Ohio State defensive back. I ended up opting for Lattimore at corner, but all indications that I’ve heard are that Tennessee will take one of Lattimore/Conley/Hooker/Adams.

Pick 6*: Cleveland Browns (via New York Jets) – Mitchell Trubisky, QB, North Carolina
#7 Overall, #1 Quarterback

First quarterback is officially off the board. In this case, the Browns trade pick #12 (first round), #33 (second round), and #145 (fifth round) to move up to the Jets’ #6 overall pick. They grab the QB that they like the most and were rumored to consider at #1 overall. I don’t know if this is where they will trade up to for sure, but this is a very real possibility come draft day.

Pick 7: Los Angeles Chargers – Malik Hooker, FS, Ohio State
#2 Overall, #1 Free Safety

Well, the Chargers get the safety they could have drafted in Jalen Ramsey last year. They finally get a guy that can create turnovers through interceptions and that can cover the backfield. This seemed like an absolute no-brainer if he’s here. But rumor is they prefer Jamal Adams if he happens to fall to #7.

Pick 8: Carolina Panthers – O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama
#11 Overall, #1 Tight End

I’ve heard everything from Christian McCaffrey to Derek Barnett to O.J. Howard. Howard is a playmaker that can make an impact in both the passing game, the redzone, and the run game. Much like Jacksonville needing help to take pressure off their QB, Howard provides that exact purpose for Cam and the Panthers.

Pick 9: Cincinnati Bengals – Derek Barnett, EDGE, Tennessee
#12 Overall, #3 Edge Rusher

I passed on Soloman Thomas who has a similar grade to Barnett on my board. Barnett seems to be the player Cincinnati favors here and as of right now all indications are that if he is here, he will be taken no later than #9. He fits what they need as an edge rusher.

Pick 10: Buffalo Bills – Mike Williams, OWR, Clemson
#19 Overall, #3 Wide Receiver

The Bills have the speedy receiver in Sammy Watkins. Now they get his fellow Tiger to play the part of the big physical jump ball receiver.

Pick 11: New Orleans Saints – Gareon Conley, OCB, Ohio State
#17 Overall, #2 Cornerback

Conley is the best available corner and they very clearly need a corner (or two) in this draft. Conley and Barnett are the two rumored targets for New Orleans here, and with Barnett gone at #9, that leaves Conley to be drafted here.

Pick 12*: New York Jets (via Cleveland Browns) – Charles Harris, EDGE, Missouri
#27 Overall, #6 EDGE

What you’ll notice with the edge rushers is that no one knows what order they’ll go as each team will have them graded drastically different based on team fit. That said, the three rumors I’ve heard for the Jets are as such: 1) the Jets really want to trade back to the mid-first round 2) the Jets want to take Gareon Conley with that pick and 3) if Conley is gone, they are very interested in Harris.

Pick 13*: Denver Broncos (via Arizona Cardinals) – Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford
#21 Overall, #3 Running Back

I don’t know what to think here. On the one hand, this is the perfect fit. Rumor is Denver has been looking to trade above Philly to take McCaffrey (who’s dad played for Denver), and here they traded pick #20 and pick #51 to do it (also getting pick #119 back) but I also keep hearing McCaffrey won’t last past ten, which would infer either Cincinnati or Carolina will take him there. Who knows what will happen, we’ll just have to wait and see…

Pick 14: Philadelphia Eagles – Marlon Humphrey, OCB, Alabama
#26 Overall, #3 Cornerback

Well, if McCaffrey had been there, we know who the pick would have been… but he is not and so Philadelphia goes cornerback here, which they so desperately need.

Pick 15: Indianapolis Colts – Haason Reddick, EDGE, Temple
#16 Overall, #2 Linebacker

This pick has gained some traction lately in mocks, and I don’t know if that’s a good sign or bad sign. I haven’t heard a lot about this pick here, but Reddick fits the defense perfect in a position that the Colts really need to draft early. Everything about this pick seems to make sense.

Pick 16: Baltimore Ravens – Solomon Thomas, EDGE, Stanford
#9 Overall, #2 EDGE

Thomas finally stops dropping. This would be a great pick for Baltimore in securing one of the top edge rushers in the draft and also fitting a team need. They are also rumored in liking Cam Robinson a lot, but I have a hard time believing they would pass on Thomas if he’s there.

Pick 17: Washington Redskins – Obi Melifonwu, SS, Connecticut
#51 Overall, #3 Strong Safety

The super athletic, big safety from Connecticut, Melifonwu seems like a reach to me, but most expect him to go round one. Most might expect a guard like Forrest Lamp to go here, but all indications from Washington’s FO indicates a safety is much more likely, and it would probably be down to Adams/Melinfonwu/Peppers depending on who fell.

Pick 18: Tennessee Titans – Corey Davis, OWR, Western Michigan
#8 Overall, #1 Wide Receiver

I love this pick. It gives Mariota another weapon to play with on offense for the Titans. I could see them double dipping in defense here as well, but I think a choice between Davis and Williams and maybe Ross is more likely.

Pick 19: Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Ryan Ramczyk, OT, Wisconsin
#23 Overall, #2 Offensive Tackle

Tampa’s lucky here, they get their first choice at tackle and I have a feeling that the first tackle may go higher than #19, but there are so many quality blue-chip defensive players, that I have a hard time justifying spending any earlier picks than about this on a tackle.

Pick 20*: Arizona Cardinals (via Denver Broncos) – Patrick Mahomes, QB, Texas Tech
#38 Overall, #2 Quarterback

Well, I think Mahomes could go top ten in this draft. I think it’s very possible two QBs go top ten, whether they warrant it or not. However, in this case, the perfect player drops right into their laps as they groom the next franchise QB behind Carson Palmer. Mike Williams, Corey Davis, and Mahomes are all in play for the Cardinals in round one.

Pick 21: Detroit Lions – Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama
#13 Overall, #1 Linebacker

Wouldn’t this be perfect for Detroit? They’re greatest need and they get a player that drops this far to them after seeming to be a top ten lock earlier this year. He’s had some issues (diluted sample at the combine for example), but he’s a solid player when you watch the tape. There are three rumors going on regarding this pick. The first is that Detroit is looking heavily at Taco Charlton here (although he could go top ten). The other two things I’ve heard are contradictory: one person I’ve heard from says he expects Foster to go top ten, another has said he expects to see Foster in the second round. We’ll see who was true.

Pick 22: Miami Dolphins – Forrest Lamp, OG, Western Kentucky
#6 Overall, #1 Offensive Guard

This could not have been a more perfect pick for Miami. They drafted Tunsil last year who played guard and will now switch to tackle. Lamp will fit right in where Tunsil was and be able to be the starting guard for the next ten years. He’s one of the safest players in the draft and an absolute stud at offensive lineman.

Pick 23: New York Giants – Cam Robinson, OT, Alabama
#41 Overall, #3 Offensive Tackle

I’m getting mixed signals here. One source has told me that Bolles is the pick here if they go offensive line. Another has told me Cam Robinson will be the pick here. Mix in the fact that they love Jarrad Davis or Tyus Bowser to play linebacker, and you’re sure to have quite a few options. I ended up going Cam Robinson, because I trust that source the most and they really need a tackle following the Erick Flowers pick.

Pick 24*: Chicago Bears (via Oakland Raiders) – Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson
#57 Overall, #5 Quarterback

Well, here’s QB #3. The Bears trade up to get the guy they are rumored to love at #3 at a reasonable cost. With Glennon there now, Glennon could essentially be a very expensive bridge quarterback and Watson adjusts, although Watson may be the most pro ready from day one (I just think he has a rather low ceiling).

Pick 25*: Jacksonville Jaguars (via Houston Texans) – David Njoku, TE, Miami (FL)
#18 Overall, #2 Tight End

Another tight end and the Jaguars are able to grab an athletic receiving tight end similar to what they could have taken in O.J. Howard. Through this first round, they will have grabbed two key offensive playmakers to help Bortles and the offense move along. He seems to fit the need and the style of offense.

Pick 26: Seattle Seahawks – Kevin King, OCB, Washington
#62 Overall, #9 Cornerback

King is the prototypical CB for Seattle in terms of size and athleticism. He lacks some technique and finesse, but rumor is that they really like him as a fit for their system and is one of their few targets in round one.

Pick 27: Kansas City Chiefs – Jarrad Davis, LB, Florida
#31 Overall, #3 Linebacker

Kansas City has been linked to several players including Deshaun Watson, Jordan Willis, and Jarrad Davis. Davis fills the linebacker for the Chiefs and will immediately make an impact in the middle of the field.

Pick 28: Dallas Cowboys – T.J. Watt, EDGE, Wisconsin
#46 Overall, #9 EDGE

Man, this was a tough pick. There are several players they’ve been linked to here including T.J. Watt, Takk McKinley, Taco Charlton, and Adoree Jackson. In fact, Jackson might be the player they’ve been most linked to recently. However, with the depth of the corners, I think taking a solid edge player like Watt in the first and then a corner in the second could pay dividends.

Pick 29*: Carolina Panthers (via Green Bay Packers) – John Ross, SWR, Washington
#14 Overall, #2 Wide Receiver

Carolina trades up and fills their slot receiver position with the fastest wide receiver to ever run at the combine. Ross is more than just a speedy receiver though as he has excellent routes. He will provide Cam with another weapon to rely on along with Howard as the Panthers look to rebound from their surprisingly bad season last year.

Pick 30: Pittsburgh Steelers – Jabrill Peppers, SS, Michigan
#32 Overall, #2 Strong Safety

If Peppers is here, he’s the pick. All reports have said that the Steelers are drooling over Peppers at the #30 pick. They also are considering Melinfonwu or Hooker or Adams if they fall, but all indications are that the Steelers want Peppers to play a hybrid safety role.

Pick 31: Atlanta Falcons – Jordan Willis, EDGE, Kansas State
#71 Overall, #10 EDGE

Rumor is, not only do the Falcons like Willis opposite Vic Beasley, but they’re willing to jump into the 15-20 range in order to grab him. I think we could see some aggression on Atlanta’s part to grab him on Thursday in round one.

Pick 32: New Orleans Saints – Taco Charlton, EDGE, Michigan
#24 Overall, #5 EDGE

CB Tre’Davious White (despite drafting a corner at #11) or a QB like Deshone Kizer could also be in play here, but an edge rusher is one of the biggest needs the Saints have after drafting a corner at #11. Charlton could very easily go top ten as some teams have him rated that highly.
