The Fear is That Danielle Hunter Is Done For The Season

The news keeps getting worse. According to Ian Rapoport, the fear is that a pec injury will keep Danielle Hunter out for the remainder of the season:

It goes without saying that this is a massive blow to the Vikings. There’s no one on this roster who can replace what he brings to the defense. The team’s DE1 has accumulated 6 sacks so far. The defense as a whole was also doing considerably better rushing the passer, which is largely because Hunter gets so much attention from the opposition. The opposition continually needs to account for him. If they don’t, he can take over a game.

Everson Griffen will become the team’s DE1 for the rest of the season. Keep in mind that he was brought in late so he could be a situational pass rusher. He is now among the Vikings’ most important defenders. It’s also worth remembering that the team recently traded away Stephen Weatherly, a problem that is made worse by Patrick Jones also going down with an injury recently.

At 3-4, the Vikings are a long, long way from the Super Bowl. The Danielle Hunter injury will make a playoff push considerably more difficult. Perhaps this news will prompt Spielman to bring someone in at the deadline, but that may be a misguided decision with the way the season has gone.
