Slowly, the Vikings Are Assembling a Coaching Staff With Upside
Kevin O’Connell is the team’s new head coach. The focus will thus shift toward fully assembling the Vikings coaching staff.
The team has already begun the work of finding and hiring assistants. It looks like Ed Donattell will be the new DC. One wonders if that’ll mean a switch to a 3-4 defense. That’s the defense they run in LA, and it was what they did in Denver (where Donatell was most recently employed). If that is the case, it’s possible the team will look to retain both Dalvin Tomlinson and Michael Pierce. Only three defensive linemen often means a team is looking for very large players.
There are also plenty of rumors about other coaches.
Like K/O, Johnson is young. Bringing in these youthful voices ought to be exciting to Vikings fans. There’s no guarantee it’ll work out, but the same can be said for veteran coaches. With youth, quite often, comes different perspectives and approaches. The hope is that youth within the Vikings coaching staff will help the team reach its potential.
It doesn’t end there, though. Brian Angelichio is being brought in as a pass game coordinator and to work with the TEs, where he has an extensive background. Chris Rumph will be taking over for Andre Patterson as the defensive line coach.
What the team has, then, is a mix of youth and experience. K/O is the young, first-time HC. Donatell is an experienced defensive coach who will be leading the defense. Several assistants are in place.
Apparently, they’re interviewing Thomas Brown for the open OC spot: “Los Angeles Rams running backs coach and assistant head coach Thomas Brown is expected to interview for the vacant offensive coordinator position with the Minnesota Vikings.” He is 35-years-old.
More to come, so stay tuned.
