Putting Kirk Cousins’ Pen in Canton

Not too long ago, Rich Eisen did a mini-rant where he praised Kirk Cousins in a tongue-in-cheek manner. To his mind, Cousins has accomplished far too little to be demanding the massive numbers he’s getting. Don’t forget that he’ll have the third-highest cap hit in the NFL for the 2022 season.

Earlier, another video of Rich Eisen discussing Kirk Cousins started making the rounds on Twitter. Check it out:

The extension Eisen is referring to is the one that Cousins signed earlier in the offseason. Instead of allowing that $45 million to hit the cap, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah got Cousins’ cap hit down to just over $31 million. The cost of doing so was another fully guaranteed year in 2023 – this time for $36.25 million – and then void years in 2024 & 2025. Cousins will come with a $12.5 million cap hit in 2024 even though he isn’t under contract.

As we’ve discussed recently, Kirk Cousins demanding 15% of the salary cap puts the Vikings in a challenging position, so Rich Eisen may be onto something.

Devoting so much money to the game’s most important position isn’t particularly noteworthy. What’s more concerning is that Cousins hasn’t ever won anything meaningful in the NFL. His best moment came a couple years ago when he took down the Saints in the opening round of the playoffs. To his credit, he was absolutely clutch in the OT drive. It was discouraging, though, to see him struggle so mightily the following week against the 49ers.

Regardless of how one feels about Cousins – and the merits of putting his contract-signing pen into Canton – the barebones fact is that he’s Minnesota’s QB1 in 2022. Like the rest of us, Rich Eisen will need to wait and see how Kirk Cousins performs this season. What we do know is that he’s running out of excuses. Another lacklustre year may undermine his self-professed desire to finish his career in Minnesota.
