Cameron Dantzler & Press Coverage

One of the things we’ve heard since Ed Donatell took over is that the Vikings’ coverage is going to change. My foray into Denver’s 2021 games certainly backs up that assumption. In all likelihood, we’re going to see Minnesota’s corners tasked with more press-man coverage. It’s thus notable that some recent research suggests that Cameron Dantzler is among the best in this regard.

When relying on press coverage, Dantzler had the fifth-highest PFF score in the NFL. Collectively, QBs had the third-lowest passer rating when targeting a Dantzler who was in press with a modest 42.0 passer rating. The conclusion is that he could handle more responsibility: “Minnesota’s Cameron Dantzler kept finding himself in Mike Zimmer’s doghouse last season. He has a lot of very good coverage numbers in his short NFL career, though, and shows well in several areas when playing press coverage.”

Minnesota has some uncertainty in their secondary. There is no clear-cut CB1, and the slot solution remains murky. Perhaps a rookie will shine; perhaps a revamped front-7 will make life easier for the defensive backs.

At 23, Cameron Dantzler is still quite young. It’s very plausible that his ceiling is far higher than what he has already shown. If we assume, though, that his current level of play is all that he’s capable of, then what kind of corner does Minnesota have? Well, they have one of the very best tackling corners in the NFL. They also have someone who does a pretty good job in coverage, especially when he’s allowed to press at the line of scrimmage.

Personally, I’m expecting good things from the third-year corner. He has made some notable mistakes in his young career, and yet he has also shown all kinds of potential. It’s hard to gauge if he’ll become more than a solid CB2, but even that kind of role would be notable given his status as a third-round selection.

Expect Cameron Dantzler to get on the field more in 2022, and expect to see him pressing receivers at the line of scrimmage.
