A new feature on Purple PTSD and Vikings Territory is the polls that can be found on each site. The most recent one featured a simple question with a not-so-simple answer: “How Many Games Will the Vikings Win in 2022?” More than 1500 people responded and the results were pretty definitive: Vikings fans are feeling hopeful.

Take a quick look at the results (as of this morning):

  • 10-11 Wins: 58.99%
  • 12+ Wins: 23.54%
  • 8-9 Wins: 14%
  • 1-7 Wins: 3.47%

Frankly, I’m surprised that most fans feel so optimistic. Minnesota fans can often participate in doom-and-gloom thinking. Years of heartbreak and letdown can do that to a fanbase. Clearly, the hiring of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Kevin O’Connell still inspires Vikings fans. More than 80% of respondents foresee 10 or more wins. Anyone would consider that a good season.

Of the four options, 1-7 seems the least likely (though it wouldn’t be altogether surprising to see the team finish 7-10). Forced to guess right now, I’d opt for the 8-9 wins option, but that’s an opinion I go back and forth on. If things go really well, there is enough talent to get to 10-7 or 11-6. To do so, the roster needs to be healthy and Kirk Cousins needs to take a step forward.

I’ve recently been working my way through a schedule prediction series. After 9 games, I’ve got Minnesota at 5-4, a result that likely won’t coincide with the broader opinion among Vikings fans. The opening week against the Packers will be tough and the Bills game (on the road) will feature Stefon Diggs against a secondary that needs to prove itself. Sprinkle in a couple more losses and a modest 5-4 record isn’t that difficult to envision. The key, of course, will rest in what Minnesota can do over the final stretch.

It’ll be interesting to see if training camp & preseason adjusts expectations for Vikings fans. As of right now, the feeling is one of optimism, hope, and positivity. Let’s hope that helps push Minnesota into a strong start to the season.
