Cameron Smith – a 2019 fifth-round pick by the Vikings – has decided to retire. He missed all of last season because of open-heart surgery. Previously, he was on Minnesota’s practice squad, but he did get into 5 games in the 2019 season. He suffered a concussion in the first Minnesota Vikings preseason game.

It’s unfortunate news. That said, there are some things that are just far, far more important than football. A young man’s long-term health is one of those things. My hope is that Smith can quickly get and stay healthy. Perhaps he’ll stay involved in the game in some other capacity.

I was hoping he’d make the final roster, but his decision opens opportunity for depth players like Ryan Connelly and Blake Lynch. There now may be even more emphasis on the perpetually-underrated Eric Kendricks continuing his stellar play. I haven’t been shy about my desire to see the Vikings make a move for K.J. Wright; maybe the Vikings will look to make a move:

It’s also notable that Anthony Barr has been absent lately. When asked about why Barr was missing, Zimmer was fairly evasive in his answer, merely noting that the veteran has “something that he’s dealing with.” I’m of the opinion that football players ought to get far more privacy than they get, so I’m fine with Zim being vague if Barr is dealing with something personal. Understandably, there is some concern among fans, though. He ought to have a big year.

Mr. Smith: we wish you all the best in retirement. Skol.
