Many of the league’s smartest teams know how to leverage the NFL’s compensatory picks system. It always stings to see impact players depart for other teams, and yet the ability to get as high as the third round in the NFL draft certainly does make things easier. Unfortunately, it looks like Minnesota won’t be getting any compensatory picks in 2022.

A recent article on Over the Cap lays out which teams will get picks and where these picks will occur. Remember that this is a projection, not an ironclad prophecy about what will occur. Nevertheless, it does give us a pretty good sense of how things will shake out. It looks like Detroit will get a late 3rd for losing Kenny Golladay last offseason. They’ll also get a 5th for losing Marvin Jones.

Otherwise, Green Bay looks to be getting a 7th. Chicago and Minnesota don’t appear in the chart breaking down who gets what.

As it stands, the Vikings have eight picks in the upcoming draft. They have a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, a trio of 6ths (classic Spielman), and a 7th. Not too long ago, I suggested that trading back from 12th could end being super beneficial if the right scenario arrives. In some ways, the best case scenario is that this year’s batch of QBs all escape the top 10, meaning there could be a frenzy to hop into the early teens to snag one of this year’s best. In this situation, the Vikings would be well-positioned to get more draft capital this season and next.

It looks like Minnesota won’t be getting any help from compensatory picks. Eight choices heading into the draft isn’t a bad spot to be in, though a team in transition will always welcome more picks. In the past, Minnesota has navigated their snug cap by ensuring they always have a lot of players on rookie deals. The new leadership may need to pursue a similar strategy, but we’ll need to wait and see.
