Might a Corner Trade be in The Works?

Gotta Hear It: Vikings Quote of the Day -- March 15, 2022

The Vikings, as many of you know by now, need a considerable amount of help in their secondary. The most pressing need is at corner. So far, there have only been depth additions in free agency. Could the Vikings look to the trade market for help?

One player to keep an eye on is Giants corner James Bradberry.

Giants GM Joe Schoen addressed the situation yesterday, noting that “[p]eople have called about certain players and people have value. Again, he’s 28 years old, he’s two years removed from a Pro Bowl season and he’s still a high-caliber corner. I mean, if it’s the right offer and it makes sense for the New York Giants I got to consider it.”

That sounds like a GM who is looking to create some interest.

In the past, Bradberry has been a CB1, finishing as the 7th-best corner in the PFF rankings in 2020. Last year, he played almost 1000 snaps out wide and only 68 in the slot. That setup shouldn’t be too worrisome for the Vikings given that they need all kinds of talent. His most recent PFF grade – a humdrum 62.8 – is no reason for excitement, and yet it would still represent a sizeable upgrade for Minnesota. The hope would be that after a trade to the Vikings, Bradberry could find himself closer to his 2020 level of play.

The primary issues likely revolve around cost. So far, the Giants have held out because they haven’t received a strong enough offer. The chances of someone sending away a first seem very, very low. A second is also a fair bit. Would the Giants move on from Bradberry for, say, a third-round pick? Possibly not, and yet there has to be at least some concern about the inability to find their desired asking price.

A trade to the Vikings shouldn’t be considered as super likely, but it is intriguing.

The veteran ran a 4.50 forty. He is 6’1 and 212, so he has the size/speed combo combo defensive coordinators like. Over the past two seasons, he has 35 passes defended and 7 interceptions. Ed Donatell has been outspoken about his desire for corners who can match up well and demonstrate good ball skills. There has to be at least some intrigue.

The $13.5 million cap hit is, taken at face value, prohibitive. For a deal to work, the Vikings would need to work out an extension, one that lowers the 2022 number by a decent margin. Being able to negotiate an extension would be critical for a Vikings trade to be at all feasible.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah re-energized the Vikings fan base by bringing in Za’Darius Smith to partner with Danielle Hunter. Pulling off a similar move for a CB1 would mean the hope train would be full steam ahead.
