Michael Floyd Tests Positive for Alcohol During House Arrest… Of Course…

Michael Floyd Drunk TMZ Deadspin

I don’t want to toot my own horn, especially in a circumstance as terrible as this, but I called this in an article I wrote when the Vikings signed Michael Floyd last month titled ‘Delving into Michael Floyd’s Baggage as an Alcoholic Myself…” . As an alcoholic myself, I essentially wrote that I didn’t believe that Floyd could become or stay sober until he admitted that he has an actual problem. None of his language or actions broadcast that he was ready to get sober, as he was defensive and was essentially lashing out at other people. So, to me, it comes as little surprise that TMZ announced that Floyd tested positive for alcohol MULTIPLE times while under house arrest (Five). As sobriety is part of his house arrest, this could actually mean jail-time for the receiver and could put his status with the team up in the air. UGH!

According to TMZ:

A rep for the Scottsdale City Court confirms … Floyd’s alcohol monitoring system flagged 5 events during June 11th and 12th. At least three of the events were described to us as “high alcohol tests.”

So, he had some drinks last Sunday. This comes after he apparently begged the judge to remove an alcohol monitor (That reads alcohol through the skin) because he argued that it would hinder his ability to play football. The judge acquiesced and Floyd was then subject to random breath tests, one of which he refused to participate in (Another red flag). Apparently Floyd has responded to this news and has blamed the BAC levels (of 0.044 and 0.055) on Kambucha, a tea with a little amount of alcohol in it. The problem is, he would have to be chugging tea in order to reach those amounts, which… as an alcoholic, wouldn’t surprise me (I’ve gone as far as to drink mouth wash before, to ward off a hangover, and to stay minty fresh).

Floyd’s house arrest was due to end next Friday, so the timing couldn’t be worse. He was due back in court on the 26th of this month, and now that date could determine whether or not he ever plays in the NFL again. Floyd went on the offensive, essentially saying:

“Totally false. The whole thing is false.” according, again, to TMZ.

We’ll see. But, at this point, I’m thinking the Vikings should move on and sign Eric Decker. I was really, really excited about the prospect of adding a deep threat of Floyd’s level, and he should be able to drink a couple drinks (Those BAC levels aren’t that high, it’s half of the level for a DUI in Minnesota) as an adult male. But the fact that he couldn’t wait another week to drink and that when he drinks he does it to excess (With multiple negative consequences that have cost him MILLIONS), considering the consequences, legally and professionally, shows that this problem isn’t to go away on it’s own. He’s lucky to be in Minnesota, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the judge didn’t sentence him to treatment at Hazelden. Although, he needs a real wake up call and should go to a facility like St. Joseph’s hospital in St. Paul, which is an intensive inpatient facility that I spent a year there one month in 2014 and that would really show him what his future is going to be unless he fixes this. Now.

People love a redemption story, but I’m not sure that this story has a happy ending. He was still due for a suspension from the NFL and I wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up suspended for the entire year, a la Josh Robinson. It’s really, really too bad and is a devastating blow to the Vikings offense/passing game. Ugh, I need a drink.
