Michael Floyd gets 1 Day in Jail for Kambucha Tea Incident

Well, that was anti-climatic.

Troubled Vikins receiver Michael Floyd went before a judge yesterday (sort of) to answer for his multiple failed breathalyzer tests from a few Sundays ago and had the book thrown… Out the window. The hearing was conducted by speaker phone by Judge Statia D. Hendrix, who essentially wanted answers for a test that Floyd had missed as well as the presence of alcohol in several other tests. As reported here yesterday, the Vikings brass essentially wrote a letter in an attempt to exonerate Michael Floyd from any wrong doing, stating that they had suggested that he drink Kambucha tea and that he has been nothing but a hard working, diligent player since they signed him a few weeks ago.

Apparently the letter worked as Floyd was only sentenced to one day in jail. While Hendrix did say that any alcohol in his system was a violation of the terms of his house arrest (Regardless of how it got there). He check into jail next Monday at 9 p.m., down in Arizona and be released the following day. The Vikings released a statement saying that they fully expect Floyd to be part of the team’s training camp, too. In it, Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said:

“When we signed Michael Floyd, we hoped he would show signs of improvement and we continue to expect that he shows progress and a professional attitude, We believe Michael will be a productive member of the Vikings organization, both on and off the field.”

Maybe he will be, but that will depend on what the NFL does to him when they make a decision regarding his suspension this season. He could receive as few as a couple games or a full season, it all really depends. According to an article on ESPN, the league essentially stated that it was aware of Floyd’s situation and is continuing to monitor things from their fortress on the East Coast. Considering the fact that the Vikings were willing to go to bat for Floyd means a lot, towards a suspension, and I fully expect him to miss up to or fewer than four games in 2017.

That’s a way better outcome than what was expected, especially right after the news of his failed tests came back. Some people panicked, myself included, as I really do believe that Floyd will have a positive impact on the Vikings this season, if he can just get out of his own way. He’s everything that the Vikings passing game needs and considering the fact that the Vikings have one of the most accurate deep ball throwers in the league behind center in Sam Bradford (Look it up!), he could have a bounce back year that could get him the sort of money in free agency he essentially forfeited after being found asleep behind the wheel of his SUV in December of last year. Here’s to hoping that he can find sobriety and happiness, and that the Vikings can benefit from it!
