Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s press conference from earlier in the week offered some interesting tidbits for Vikings fans. A couple of the questions were about veterans Anthony Barr and Patrick Peterson. In both instances, KAM suggested that salary cap constraints makes bringing them back challenging.

Patrick Peterson hasn’t been shy about his desire to stick around town. In fact, he has been remarkably consistent in his message. The veteran corner wants to stay; the ball is thus in Minnesota’s court.

KAM was respectful of Peterson in his presser: “He texted me the other day. He’s a great person, been a great player in this league for a long time. We’re trying to be solutions-oriented about everything we do here, you want to make sure that you respect a player of his caliber and his expertise in this league, but also the reality of the situation we’re in.” So, a bit of a lukewarm response about the veteran corner. One wonders if the team is willing to offer much more than just a few million. Matching last season’s $8 million wouldn’t be wise.

The situation with Anthony Barr seems even more bleak: “I had a conversation with him the other day. That’s going to be a tougher situation to navigate. Never say never. Those decisions are tough, but ultimately sometimes they have to be made.” Barr, it seems, will be playing elsewhere.

This is the cold, hard truth on these matters: the salary cap and its constraints are a convenient excuse. If Peterson and Barr were the priority, then they’d be the priority. In other words, if the team really wanted those two back, they’d shift around the money to do so. Instead, they’ve opted for Harrison Phillips, Jordan Hicks, and Za’Darius Smith. Hopefully, they’ll also make a move for J.C. Tretter.

At the end of the day, it’s wise to never say never. Perhaps Kwesi Adofo-Mensah will find a way to bring Peterson or Barr back, but it looks like the team is pretty much ready to move on.
