It’s Time to Give Jerry Jones a Call

Perhaps this is mere tomfoolery, the sort of misinformation that commonly populates the headlines during April. Perhaps it’s something more substantial. That’s why Kwesi Adofo-Mensah would be wise to give Jerry Jones a call.

After expressing his willingness to trade up, Jones indicates that he’ll need to “see what’s there and who’s on the other end of the line.” Shortly thereafter, he suggests that there is at least a player or two who he feels merits the draft capital to jump up: “But I would trade up, since we’re down as low as we are in the first two or three rounds if we had a chance to and somebody that we had really coveted was sitting at the bottom … and we were able to trade up and get him.”

The Cowboys have lost some notable talent during the offseason. Amari Cooper is no longer in town, and Randy Gregory ended up with the Broncos. They also lost two strong players along the OL: La’el Collins and Connor Williams. In other words, there are a few spots that could use a talent infusion.

One wonders if Jerry Jones is in love with one of the top wide receives, or perhaps one of the great offensive linemen. If one starts to fall, would a trade up to 12th overall be plausible?

Moving from 24th to 12th is a significant jump, so the Cowboys would need to attach some serious draft capital. The old trade value chart – the one with the numerical values attached to each pick – suggests that there is a 460 point discrepancy between 12th and 24th. Dallas’ 56th pick (340 points) and 88th pick (150 points) would bring things closer to equal. Mind you, this is an outdated chart, but some teams still do use it as just one way of evaluating things.

I think Dallas would be foolish to make this deal, but I’m sure there are a lot of talent evaluators and fans who would think that it’s a bad idea for Minnesota to drop so low in the draft.

Thankfully, none of us are in charge of that decision. At the end of the day, the burden falls on Kwesi. He should, at the very least, give Jerry Jones a call to gauge his actual interest. From there, have a plan in place for a draft day chat if someone slides. It’s possible the Vikings could get a massive haul in return for dropping to 24th.
