Instead of a Reunion, Vikings Opt for Albert Wilson at Receiver

At first, it looked like the Vikings would be joining forces with Dede Westbrook, who played for Minnesota last season. Instead, they’ve opted for Albert Wilson.

Minnesota, quite evidently, wasn’t married to the idea of adding Westbrook. The greater priority appears to have been about adding a veteran. In so doing, the Vikings are hoping to solidify the receiving depth.

The 5’9, 195 pound Albert Wilson has spent seven years in the NFL. He missed all of 2020. At his best, Wilson has put forth 42 catches, 554 yards, and 3 TDs. That occurred in 2017 with Kansas City. The broader statistics are similarly modest, so fans ought not expect Justin Jefferson 2.0. Instead, Wilson is a veteran depth signing who may push some of the younger guys.

Since 2018, he has been with Miami. Jesse Davis – a free agent signing from earlier in the offseason – also played for Miami last season.

According to PFF, Wilson had 163 snaps in the slot and 196 out wide in 2021. The ability to line up both inside and outside is important for any player, especially one fighting for a roster spot. Wilson also had two kick returns.

What’s a little more surprising is that Wilson doesn’t have a history returning punts. The signing, then, appears to be mostly about receiver depth. Wilson may look to contribute in special teams coverage, but this deal appears to have more to do with the offense than the specials.

With Jefferson, Adam Thielen, and K.J. Osborn, the Vikings don’t have too much room on their offense for other wideouts. Tossing Ihmir Smith-Marsette, Bisi Johnson, and Jalen Nailor into the mix makes things look even more challenging for the veteran free agent.

Regardless, Wilson is now a Viking, and the hope is that he’ll end up becoming a rock-solid contributor.
