Likelihood That Kansas City May Look to a Draft Night Trade Increases

Rumors have been abundant for the Kansas City Chiefs. They are coming into the draft with an abundance of draft capital – the 29th, 30th, 50th, and 62nd picks – and some clear areas of need, most notably at wide receiver. One of the interesting things to monitor is that Kansas City may feel compelled to pull off a trade given their evaluation of this year’s prospects.

Apparently, they only have a first-round grade on 16 to 18 players:

Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach said the team has about 16 to 18 players with first-round grades, and it’s likely they’ll all be off the board when the Chiefs are on the clock.

Veach suggests that the “odds of maybe one of those guys falling isn’t great” while going on to praise the value that can be had in the second round.

There are at least a couple ways of interpreting Veach’s remarks. Perhaps Kansas City will look to trade down once their picks arrive since they don’t view anyone as being worthy of that draft slot. He’s thus letting the league know preemptively that he’s likely open for business. If that’s the case, then perhaps Minnesota looks to move from 46th up to either 29 or 30.

Another way to interpret his comments involve a first-round trade up. Maybe the Chiefs lean on their abundance of early draft choices to aggressively jump up in the opening round. If that’s the case, then Minnesota’s 12th pick is an option. There is going to be a great receiver available at #12, so the Chiefs may be interested.

Regardless of if Minnesota is involved, there’s a very good chance Kansas City looks to pull off a trade on Thursday night. If that’s true, then Kwesi Adofo-Mensah ought to at least pick up the phone to see if there’s a deal that works well for both sides.
