Vikings Podcast: Hock, Shock, and 2 Smoking Predictions

Gotta admit: I’m a sucker for snappy titles. Shock may be a touch strong, but let’s roll with it for the rhyme that just rolls off the tongue.

In the latest episode of Notes from the North — a humble Vikings podcast — Sizzlin’ Sam and I unpack the T.J. Hockenson news, discuss the roster surprises/predictions, and then offer a pair of season predictions. Take a peak at what he had to say: “Kyle and Sam breakdown Kyle’s prediction results, and the Hockenson extension. Then they give areas they are looking for in terms of success or challenges the team may face, before giving a final prediction on the record for the season.”

Sizzlin’ Sam is always a man of few words. Let’s offer up a few more thoughts.

Massive money, to be sure, and yet the eye-catching headlines make the situation appear different from reality.

Hockenson is a great player who deserves a great contract. Previously, there has been some discussion about the modest yards-per-catch average as a reason for pause, but the hope is that Kevin O’Connell will allow the talented tight end to get down the field with greater regularity.

The fine work over at Over the Cap helps demystify how the contract will actually impact Minnesota’s budget moving forward. We spend a few moments discussing the finances on the podcast.

Finishing at 49/53 for my roster prediction isn’t a bad place to be, but it falls short of an elite guess. Listen in for some added thoughts on the matter.

Finally, we offer a couple predictions for how the season will unfold. There’s a final record guess, a divisional winner declared, and some specific areas of the team that are both encouraging and worrisome.
