The Vikings Turned Down a Trade

A first-round trade between the Lions and Vikings has caused no little debate. Indeed, since the deal was done, Minnesota fans have expressed plenty of approval and dismay.

Instead of staying put at 12, the Vikings dropped all the way down to 32nd. Once there, they made safety Lewis Cine the first choice of the Kwesi Adofo-Mensah era. Meanwhile, Detroit aggressively moved up so they could take receiver Jameson Williams. Provided he makes a full recovery, Williams will likely go on to become Detroit’s WR1 for the next several years.

A recent video that has been circulating shows just how excited the Lions were to have pulled off the first-round trade with the Vikings:

Detroit desperately needs a major talent infusion. Being able to get arguably the best receiver in the draft at 12 – and after getting Aidan Hutchinson earlier – is a major win for their franchise. I still maintain that it was a bad deal for the Vikings, though I’m enthused about several of the players Minnesota chose (including Cine at 32).

The Lions video shows Detroit’s management expressing their enthusiasm, but the Vikings video shows the mirror image. If you skip to around the 4 minute mark, you’ll see Adofo-Mensah chatting with Kevin O’Connell, going back and forth as they wait for their pick. We see a phone call of the GM apparently fielding a trade offer. After hanging up, Adofo-Mensah confirms it was Detroit and the video jumps to him describing the trade as “the home-run scenario” and as something he “dreamt” of.

The best trades are the ones that involve both parties leaving happy. The Buffalo/Minnesota deal from a couple years ago is a great example. The Bills are thrilled to have Stefon Diggs; the Vikings are thrilled to have Justin Jefferson. Ideally, we’ll look back at this trade as one where both the Vikings and Lions did well for themselves.
