Well, it may not be the name everyone has been monitoring, but it’s still of some significance. According to the NFL Network‘s Mike Garafolo, the Jets are bringing QB Tim Boyle aboard, a former Packers QB. Presumably, the deal is a precursor to the eventual Aaron Rodgers trade.

Take a look at the word from Garafolo:

The hyperbolic shot at the end – New York bringing #12 to town “someday between now and the end of time” – simply underscores the absurdity of the situation. At some point, a deal will be completed and NY will have a new quarterback. When will that occur? Nobody knows.

In the meantime, Boyle (a different former Packers QB) will get acclimated to life in the Big Apple.

The 6’4″, 233-pound quarterback has been all over the NFC North in his still-young NFL career. From 2019-20, Boyle was employed in Wisconsin by the Cheeseheads. In subsequent seasons, he went to Detroit and Chicago. Circling back at some point to join Kevin O’Connell’s squad would give the journeyman the NFC North grand slam.

He has a trio of career starts, all occuring with the Lions in 2021. He went 0-3 in that stretch, completing close to 65% of his passes for the season as a whole. He tossed 3 TDs but also 6 INTs. The 1:2 ratio isn’t stellar, folks.

New York also has QBs Zach Wilson (the 2nd overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft) and Chris Streveler. Bringing Rodgers to town will make the QB room even more crowded.

From the outside looking in, the decision to add Tim Boyle is likely in preparation for life with Aaron Rodgers. New York has already hired Nathaniel Hackett to be the OC and signed Allen Lazard to complement their offense. The decision to agree to terms with Boyle is simply the continuation of the red carpet treatment they’re giving Mr. Rodgers, who will eventually be in the Hall of Fame.

Currently, OTC doesn’t have the contract details for Boyle. It’s a safe assumption that the deal will be modest.

Different coaches have different philosophies about the ideal attributes for a QB2. For some, though, the priority rests in having someone who can essentially function as another coach. Getting a peer’s perspective throughout the week and during the game itself (picture the moments when you see Kirk Cousins looking at a tablet with Nick Mullens) is valuable.

The New York Jets employ former Vikings Tyler Conklin and Chazz Surratt. The 2023 schedule doesn’t include a matchup between Minnesota and New York, so any game would need to occur in the Super Bowl. If that unlikely situation materializes, Rodgers would get yet another opportunity to continue inflicting pain on Vikings fans.
