The Minnesota Vikings have been a historically great franchise over the years, but no era of Vikings football saw more success than that of the late 1960s through the 1970s. Those defenses under legendary head coach Bud Grant played hard-nosed, physical football that dominated the league for years.

While those Vikings never achieved the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl, they appeared in four of them, and those years are considered the glory days of the Vikings franchise.

As a result, for 2023, the team has announced that they will be honoring those teams by playing in classic throwback uniforms inspired by those worn in the early years of the franchise’s history. Now, the stars of today’s Vikings roster will don the uniforms worn by past legends like Carl Eller, Alan Page, and Fran Tarkenton. Here is a description of the uniforms from the team website:

The Vikings will sport Classic jerseys in Week 1 that have been designed to pay homage to the team’s earlier voyages with a deeper Purple hue than the modern jersey.

The Classic was first unveiled to Season Ticket Members on July 18 during an event with VRTL that featured original Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton and current fullback C.J. Ham.

Elements include large numbers with traditional slab serif font and gold trim. Sleeves feature the original classic striping.

Minnesota Vikings tackle Frank Myers (74) tries to block Green Bay Packers defensive end Ezra Johnson (78) as he chases the quarterback Fran Tarkenton (10) on Oct. 22, 1978, at the Metropolitan Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Minnesota Vikings defeated the Green Bay Packers 21-7.

Fans won’t have to wait long to see the uniforms in action, either. The Vikings will debut the regular season by donning these uniforms in their Week 1 home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, September 10th. Hopefully they bring the team great success as they hope to kick off their 2023 season on a positive note.

Training camp officially begins on Sunday, and the Vikings kickoff their regular season 54 days from today.
