A Look at the Vikings Defensive Woes

If the Vikings defense is going to show improvement in 2022, it’ll be because Ed Donatell found a way to get more out of his players.

There is a lot of talent on that side of the ball. The key is keeping the talent healthy and then using those players in a manner that puts them in a position to succeed. If everything goes well, it won’t be surprising to see this group put forth a considerably stronger performance in the upcoming season.

In his recent press conference, Donatell emphasized that the Vikings defense is benefiting from a coaching staff that is working well together. “I can’t say enough about this staff all the way through […] It’s a very talented staff and a cohesive staff.”

He also praises Kevin O’Connell for the “cutting edge schemes and formations” and notes that “connecting” as a staff has been a “major focus.”

His defense is one that requires players who move really well. The middle linebackers need to be able to get to the sideline in a hurry since the flats are often left unoccupied by the corner. “[E]verybody’s linebackers,” the DC notes, “have gotta be able to run.” Eric Kendricks certainly thrives in this regard. There are at least two reasons why Minnesota’s stud MLB can play so fast. The most basic thing is simply that he’s, well, fast. The other is that he evidently puts a fair bit of work into studying and preparing. If he didn’t, it’d be hard to imagine him being able to react so instinctively.

If things go according to plan, Minnesota’s offense will lead the charge in 2022. Even still, the team (and its fans) are anticipating a much improved Vikings defense, largely because of some hope in what Donatell can do. Let’s hope all of the positive news amounts to greater performance on the field.
