Free agent linebacker Anthony Barr received a notable nomination recently. He was named as a finalist for the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award.

The award is “given to an athlete whose continuous, demonstrated leadership has created a measured positive impact on their community through sports. The candidate must embrace the core principals that Muhammad Ali embodied so well, including confidence, conviction, dedication, giving and respect.”

According to NFL.com, the former Vikings LB stands alongside athletes from other major sports: “Barr, who played the past eight seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, is one of four Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award nominees, along with Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals, Brad Stuver of Austin FC and Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves.”

Vikings.com has written about the Raise the Barr Foundation. The purpose is “to support single parents continuing their education.” “Since Anthony and Lori co-founded Raise the Barr in 2016,” the article explains, “the nonprofit has given more than $410,000 in scholarships and emergency grants.”

Folks, there are some things that are just more important than football. Well done to Anthony Barr for making a difference off the field.

The award show takes place on July 20.
