The Vikings’ New GM Didn’t Budge

The Vikings’ new GM didn’t budge. Quite possibly, there was some pressure to spend more aggressively, but Rob Brzezinski opted to stick to his guns.
Basically, all that occurred for most of the week was to add a single external talent — veteran corner James Pierre — alongside the retention of some in-house talent: linebacker Eric Wilson, defensive lineman Jalen Redmond, special teams menace Tavierre Thomas, and so on. Oh, and a passer did get added. As a result, the de facto GM has fulfilled the promise he made.
The Vikings’ New GM as Patient as Promised
Shrink the focus down to a single conversation that lasted just seven minutes.
At the NFL Combine, Brzezinski chatted with Tatum Everett of the Vikings Entertainment Network. The long-time executive dug into what his approach was going to look like, describing how he was keen to work alongside Kevin O’Connell to improve the Vikings.

“We want to make good, sound decisions,” Brzezinski said in response to a question about whether Minnesota could be aggressive or less-than-aggressive when enhancing the talent.
Further thoughts from Brzezinski: “Not forcing anything. We have areas that we want to improve in. Obviously, every team does. But we can only get better in areas where there is opportunity. And it has to be reciprocal.”

Perhaps the most infamous line involving an NFL GM and team building came out of Los Angeles a few years ago. Les Snead, who has proven to be tremendous, sent along a thought — “f%$^ them picks” — while describing the effort to leverage his team’s most coveted assets to compete right now. Quite the contrast when held up against what Brzezinski is saying.
Later on, he notes how “you can only do this by stacking good decisions, not trying to force anything and make something happen overnight.” Slow and steady is a key part of the ethos being espoused.

Indeed, the vision being described by Rob Brzezinski isn’t flashy. It is, nevertheless, pretty savvy.
He’s not lacking in ambition; after all, he openly acknowledges his dream of playing a part in Minnesota winning a Super Bowl.
What’s notable about his approach is his commitment to “sound” decisions that are predicated of being patient and by pursuing what’s available to him. Essentially, he’s not going to force anything that isn’t there by overpaying or forfeiting key assets.
Technically, the Vikings’ new GM hasn’t yet been determined. Rob Brzezinski hasn’t pulled off a flawless week — missing on the young linebacker talent may be regrettable — but he has fulfilled his word.
Showing restraint and wisdom could result in the long-time front office executive solidifying his spot as the top decision maker.
