Kwesi Adofo-Mensah Earns a Spiffy New Title
For a little while, it’s been known that Kwesi Adofo-Mensah went back to work in San Francisco’s front office. What hasn’t been known was what his job would be.
Until recently.
The Vikings’ former GM is now the 49ers’ Vice President, Personnel and Strategy. Pro Football Talk covered the news: “49ers General Manager John Lynch announced in February that the team had hired Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. On Wednesday, the 49ers announced Adofo-Mensah’s title. He will serve as vice president, personnel and strategy.”
While not as prestigious as being a general manager, Adofo-Mensah nevertheless finds himself in a prominent role. As a result, he’ll be in a position to keep growing and climbing, possibly getting another shot as a GM.
For whatever it’s worth, San Francisco’s website lists Adofo-Mensah under the “Personnel & Scouting” section of its front office. Only RJ Gillen, the Assistant General Manager, is listed higher.
Kwesi Adofo-Mensah Lands on His Feet
Admittedly, front office titles can be murky, so focus on those two main words: personnel and strategy.
Oftentimes, the “personnel” end of things gets divided between college and the pros. Some guys and gals focus on talent that is yet to arrive while others focus on talent that is currently making noise in the league. Run the assessments up to the GM, who then makes the final call when a final call needs to be made.
Conspicuously absent from Adofo-Mensah’s title is a limiting “college” or “pro” descriptor. So, the former Vikings GM appears to have some freedom to dabble in both sides.
And then there’s the odd, bland word: “strategy.”
Obviously, football is a strategic sport. The issue is that the word is so common that using it says everything and nothing at the same time. Every single position needs to be strategic.
Best guess is that Adofo-Mensah is going to be allowed to get pulled in a lot of directions within his current job. He can help crunch numbers on the salary cap, comment on compensatory pick scenarios, and construct analytics models. He can consult with the scouting side of things while lending his math savvy to folks who are move invested in the business end of things.
He is, in short, a man of many talents. A touch raw, perhaps, but Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is a versatile talent who could get plugged into different jobs. Any team employing him would therefore be wise to use him accordingly. Give him various responsibilities and he’ll do a good job.
To my eye, Adofo-Mensah wasn’t bad at his job. He made several poor decisions, mostly due to inexperience. Give the brainy, hard-working executive time. Don’t be surprised if he gets another shot and ends up doing well.
The Vikings and 49ers play in the 2026 regular season, doing so in Mexico City. Look to Week 11 of the schedule for that game. Maybe the former executive gets a bit of revenge.
Minnesota is being led by a newcomer at GM in Nolan Teasley. He’s coming out of Seattle’s front office after doing some tremendous work for a team that just won the Lombardi Trophy, in no small part due to the man who got away from Minnesota: QB Sam Darnold.
Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is 45, which is quite young in the NFL.
