Caleb Banks Has an Incredibly High Ceiling
With the 18th overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings selected Florida IDL Caleb Banks. This selection came as a bit of a shock to many Vikings fans, as most draft enthusiasts had been assuming Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman would be the choice there for months. The Vikings threw a curveball, gave Caleb Banks a call, and Thieneman would fall to 25th overall to the Chicago Bears.
Banks is a total boom-or-bust type of prospect. During his collegiate career, he flashed his freak athleticism at multiple points, and his large frame was impossible to overlook.
Banks began his college career in Louisville, where he remained for two seasons. After the 2022 season, he would transfer to Florida and make a name for himself. Over the span of his 35-game collegiate career, Caleb Banks racked up 48 total tackles, 10.5 TFLs, 6.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 PBU. It’s important to note that he only played in three games his final year in 2025 due to a foot injury that sidelined him for a significant amount of time.
Banks joins what is, in theory, a very scary Minnesota Vikings defensive front. In the best case scenario, Banks starts on the interior alongside fellow 2026 draftee Domonique Orange and Jalen Redmond. These men would hypothetically be between Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner on the edges. I said “best case scenario” because this may not be the case all of the time. Sure, there will be packages where all five of them are sharing the field, but with a rookie learning curve and the frequent rotation of defensive linemen in a Brian Flores defense, it’s not going to be an every-down thing.
Caleb Banks Gets Love from Vikings Insider Alec Lewis
On the same episode of “Beat Writers Roundtable” on the Vikings YouTube channel in which he praised the development of J.J. McCarthy, Alec Lewis of The Athletic also had some nice things to say about Caleb Banks when asked who he is excited to watch during training camp in August.
“I mean, he is a massive human being and a guy. When you watch the tape, he has a ton of talent and physical attributes that you just don’t see all the time. And so, first to see him healthy, second, to see what he looks like in this system working with Ryan Nielsen, the new defensive line coach who will will demand a certain standard every day.
And then just what it looks like collectively, him alongside Andrew Van Ginkel, Dallas Turner, that is fascinating for me to just consider and to think about. So, he’s the obvious, probably most low-hanging fruit answer, but can’t wait to just see what he looks like out there.”
Lewis is right in that Caleb Banks is an absolute gargantuan of a human being. He stands at about 6’6 and weighs in the range of 330 lbs. The height could be a little bit of an issue as he’s getting started in the NFL. On his Florida tape, he had a tendency to allow his pads to get too high. If he can learn to stay low and get under offensive linemen, he has a chance to be an absolute freak for the Vikings for a long time.
Caleb Banks Joins an Already Established Defense
The Vikings’ defense since Brian Flores has relied on all-out pressure to hold opposing offenses at bay. Minnesota already had some threats off the edge in Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner, and a solid pass-rushing interior lineman in Jalen Redmond.
Now, Caleb Banks is bringing his sky-high ceiling to the Twin Cities. If Banks works out and works out early, then opposing game-planners are going to have worse nightmares than they already do when prepping for Vikings week. The Vikings drafted three lineman in their first four picks, noting an obvious understanding that football begins in the trenches.
Caleb Banks could be a star game-wrecker, Domonique Orange could be an unsung hero in the run game, and offensive tackle Caleb Tiernan could be an eventual starting tackle or even guard down the road.
