Report: Vikings Working to Extend Brian Flores Before Offseason

The Minnesota Vikings are actively working on an extension for defensive coordinator Brian Flores, whose contract expires after the 2025 season, according to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio.
The Minnesota Vikings enter the final week of the 2025 season with an 8-8 record. A primary reason for the disappointing record is the subpar quarterback play. Conversely, the record remains respectable thanks to one man: Brian Flores. Flores joined in 2023 and has been the defensive commander for three seasons. The Vikings cannot afford to lose him.

The defensive coordinator has built a fantastic unit that has helped clinch several wins this season despite limited offensive support. His contract is set to expire, and it’s certainly an offseason priority to keep him in the building.
Florio reported Saturday, “Flores, in his third season as the Vikings’ defensive coordinator, is in the final year of his contract. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Vikings are currently working toward extending his deal. The Vikings wanted to do it before the 2025 regular season. Flores decided to wait. If he was betting on himself, he won.”
With relatively few high-cost free agents looming, retaining Flores stands out as the Vikings’ most pressing offseason priority. Ultimately, the two top offseason questions are whether Flores remains and who will challenge (or replace) QB1 J.J. McCarthy.

Flores’ latest Christmas performance has put him once again in the head-coaching spotlight. The Vikings would be unable to prevent him from leaving if he were offered one of the league’s 32 head coaching jobs However, his current contract situation allows him to pursue other coordinator positions as well.
The Rams and the Cowboys might need a different DC (for different reasons), and those franchises get a little more attention from the national media than the Vikings, which could help him generate HC interest in the future.
The good news is that he doesn’t seem to be keen on leaving for a lateral move.
ESPN’s Kevin Seifert noted, “Flores’ contract as the Minnesota Vikings’ defensive coordinator will expire after this season. NFL rules allow coordinators to break their deals if they are offered a head coaching job, but Flores’ situation will allow him to explore his coordinator options around the league as well. There are no indications that either Flores or the Vikings are eager to part ways, and Flores enjoys wide latitude and significant personnel influence in Minnesota. But the franchise must brace for the possibility that it will lose one of its top assets.”

Flores has more personnel say than most defensive coordinators, and his head coach is letting him do his thing rather than micromanaging him. He’s also getting full credit for the defensive success. Another benefit of staying onboard is that he has collected assets that fit his defensive scheme. Those include versatile defenders Joshua Metellus and Andrew Van Ginkel. Players he hired, like Blake Cashman, Isaiah Rodgers, or Jonathan Greenard, are also under contract for at least one more season.
If no deal is reached, Flores would be free to explore both head coaching and coordinator opportunities.
