The Case for Aaron Rodgers as the Vikings’ New QB1

Make no mistake: if Aaron Rodgers signs a deal in Minnesota, the expectation will be that he’ll be starting in Week 1.

The long-time Packer is coming off a failed time as the Jets’ top passer. Recently, there has been plenty of speculation online about the upcoming quarterback movement within NFL free agency. Within that discussion is a repeated emphasis on Rodgers possibly joining the Vikings.

Aaron Rodgers as the Vikings’ New QB1

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Right now, there’s a lot of purple smoke surrounding Mr. Rodgers.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic is one insider to connect Rodgers to Minnesota. Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of The NFL Network similarly link Rodgers and the Vikings (Rapoport and Garafolo). Tom Pelissero delivers a great health update on J.J. McCarthy but stops short of a Rodgers connection, instead describing the franchise’s desire for a veteran passer. And then there’s a similar update from Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz and some humorous musings from ESPN’s Kevin Seifert.

Oh, and then there’s the word from Sauce Gardner: “if Aaron goes to the Vikings, he might be #1 in all QB stats.”

First, consider the possibility from Aaron Rodgers’ side of things.

The long-time NFL starter is coming off a pair of subpar seasons with the Jets (in fairness, there was a major injury in one). Moving to Minnesota would arguably give him the most talented collection of pass catchers he’s ever had alongside an offensive mastermind in Kevin O’Connell calling the shots (which is to say nothing of the respect that Wes Phillips and Josh McCown command).

Helping matters, at least from Rodgers’ perspective, is that there are a pair of excellent offensive tackles and the return of Aaron Jones (the news just arrived), his former teammate in Green Bay. Gotta think he would love the talent around him.

Opposite the offense is a defense that’s good enough to create a lot of problems in the regular season (playoff success has been a bit elusive, but the team is growing). Brian Flores has proven to be a very good defensive tactician and is one of the game’s top defensive minds. He brings balance to the team, giving the Vikings a pair of formidable units.

The basic idea that Aaron Rodgers could look at the setup in Minnesota and want in isn’t at all far-fetched. What veteran passer who is chasing another ring wouldn’t want to toss the ball to Justin Jefferson while playing in top-tier facilities for a first-rate coaching staff? Yes, the playoff exit stung, but we’re still talking about a 14-3 team that had Sam Darnold leading things.

Now, will the Vikings reciprocate the interest in Rodgers? That’s the major question, folks.

For starters, there’s the headache that can get caused with Rodgers. He’s an often controversial passer who snags more than his fair share of scorn. Will there be a distraction? Team culture is hugely important to Minnesota, so any disruptions/distractions in the locker room won’t go over well.

Keep in mind, as well, that he tore his Achilles a couple of seasons ago and is 41. How’s his body feeling? What’s he going to want on his next contract? If he ends up losing the offseason battle to McCarthy, will he really accept being a backup passer?

Kevin O’Connell appreciates excellent quarterback play. Few, if any, have ever possessed more talent to play the position than Aaron Rodgers. He’s a Super Bowl champion and has won MVP four times. He’s a four-time first-team All Pro and ten-time Pro Bowler. When the time comes, Rodgers will get into the Hall of Fame on the first try.

Whether Aaron Rodgers makes sense to pursue as a one-year solution, though, remains to be seen. Throughout all of the rumblings, I’ve believed that the Vikings won’t sign Rodgers, but we’ll soon learn what’s actually going to take place.

The Vikings have roughly $60 million in cap space. Rodgers has made more than $380 million in his career.
