Vikings Get the Job Done, Sign QB

Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy kisses the championship trophy to celebrate the Wolverines' 34-13 win over Washington in the national championship game at NRG Stadium in Houston on Monday, Jan. 8, 2024.

Well, there may have been a bit of hand wringing in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but the Vikings have gotten the job done. J.J. McCarthy has put pen to paper.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter has the word: “Sources: Minnesota Vikings No. 10 overall pick J.J. McCarthy is signing a four-year, fully-guaranteed contract worth $21.85 million that includes a $12.71 million signing bonus and a fifth-year team option.”

Vikings Get J.J. McCarthy Under Contract

Not too long ago, PurplePTSD discussed the issue of the unsigned rookies. At the time, though, training camp was still several weeks away. Currently, it’s just a couple days away.

Locking in Mr. McCarthy means it’s full steam ahead for the Vikings’ most important pick. Eventually, McCarthy is going to take over as the QB1 in Minnesota, but the expectation is that Sam Darnold will be the QB1 for potentially all of 2025.

Recently, a lot of the word coming out of Minnesota has been one of praise for McCarthy’s arm strength. The kid has good velocity, as several players and coaches can attest.

Known for accuracy, athleticism, and winning as a Wolverine, McCarthy will enter training camp as a backup. His goal will be to continue learning and to continue showing that he can place the ball in a good spot.

And, of course, he’ll need to also find the delicate balance of velocity and touch on his passes. All part of the maturation process.

The focus is now going to shift to Dallas Turner, a super talented edge rusher who was picked at No. 17 in the 2024 NFL Draft. Minnesota is leaning on him to form a terrifying trio with Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel.

Both McCarthy and Turner are just 21.

Minnesota’s rookies arrive to training camp on Sunday, July 21st. Football is almost here.
