Former Vikings WR Retires

The 2022 NFL offseason saw some pretty massive changes for the Minnesota Vikings.

Of course, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Kevin O’Connell became the new general manager/head coach tandem for the franchise, and they quickly got to work reshaping Minnesota’s roster in their liking. One of their first moves was bringing in Albert Wilson for the wide receiver room.

Now, the former Vikings WR is officially calling it quits in the NFL as he retired over the weekend.

24/7 Sports‘ Ben Moore tweeted on Saturday, “Former Georgia State Star WR Albert Wilson has announced that he retiring from the NFL. AW2 signed with the Chiefs as an UDFA & played with the Dolphins, Raiders and Vikings. Congrats to my guy Albert Wilson!”

Wilson began his NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs back in 2014, and he almost immediately captured a role for himself despite entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia State. During his rookie season, he caught 16 passes for 260 yards.

The receiver would spend each of the next three seasons in Kansas City, and he put together a career year in 2017, the year before Patrick Mahomes officially took over the starting QB role. During that year, Wilson put together 42 receptions for 554 yards and three touchdowns. All three statistics were career-highs.

Wilson then signed with the Miami Dolphins for the 2018 season, and he played three seasons for his new team (2018-2019, 2021). In total, he caught 94 passes for 955 yards and five touchdowns during his three seasons in Miami.

After the conclusion of the 2021 season, Wilson signed with the Vikings heading into 2022. The receiver was buried on a depth chart that featured Justin Jefferson, Adam Thielen, and K.J. Osborn, which essentially ensured he wouldn’t hold much of a role in Minnesota.

Even still, Wilson appeared in two preseason games that year, and he showed out by catching two passes for 22 yards. Both of his receptions went for touchdowns as well.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough for Wilson to make the final roster heading into the regular season as he was cut following the second preseason game. He then caught on with the Raiders in October, but he wouldn’t play any games for Las Vegas.

Wilson now retires after he finished his NFL career with 218 receptions for 2499 yards and 12 touchdowns. He turns 32 years old in July.
