Bottomless Root Beers with Kirk Cousins

Kyle Brandt shared a video on Twitter that features a certain quarterback expressing his desire to head to Applebee’s for “bottomless root beers.”

Indeed, Kirk Cousins joins Brandt in the comical video. Minnesota’s QB1 leans into the notion that he’s not particularly trendy or cool. Instead, Cousins gets depicted as a suburban dad, a family man who will make corny jokes.

Brandt carries most of the video. He rolls up in his PT Cruiser, rattling off dad jokes as he sprinkles in his praise for Minnesota. He identifies Cousins as “just an ordinary dad” and “the Kirkland brand quarterback” (a pun that I’m sure is fully intended). He then relies on some clever word play to connect the chains around Cousins’ neck to chain restaurants and moving the chains on the football field.

“This is not,” Brandt indicates, “your older brother’s Vikings team.” At 9-2, it’s hard to disagree. This Minnesota team is different.

Shortly thereafter, Kirk Cousins calls him on the phone. The offer is for each to bring their families to an Applebee’s since the QB – who has made a touch more than $186 million in his career – has a gift card. Much of the appeal, Cousins explains, is the promise of bottomless root beers.

Part of the intent of the video is to playfully articulate some support for the Vikings. Brandt is pulling for Minnesota, and he does a nice job of highlighting how well the purple QB has been playing. I, for one, think that 2022 Cousins is the best Cousins. His ability to lead this squad to 9 wins in 11 games is impressive.

Minnesota’s quarterback has been getting a lot more attention in 2022. That’s what comes with being the QB1 for a team that is near the top of the league. If the Packers take down the Eagles tonight, Minnesota will once again be in a tie for first place in the NFL. That kind of team success will prompt the media to pay more attention to the QB.

Moving forward, the hope is that Kirk Cousins can keep having fun on and off the field. Whatever he has been doing is working. The offense is leading the Vikings, overcoming the sometimes concerning defense to put plenty of games in the win pile. If bottomless root beers at Applebee’s helps, then hopefully Brandt can keep coordinating some dinners out with Minnesota’s QB1.
