Lewis Cine Undergoes Successful Surgery on Tuesday

The Minnesota Vikings may have won their London game against the New Orleans Saints, but it came at a massive cost. 2022 first-round pick Lewis Cine had to be carted off the field and transported to a local hospital after his leg rolled up and under himself during a play. The injury has been diagnosed as a compound fracture to Cine’s lower leg, meaning the bone broke through his skin after fracturing.
Since the injury, Cine has undergone surgeries in back-to-back days. Monday’s procedure was described as “preparatory” while Tuesday’s surgery attempted to actually repair the fracture. Following the second surgery, the Minnesota Vikings have announced the surgery was successful, and Cine is officially on the road to recovery.
Cine remains in London for the time being post-surgery, and the team left members of the organization behind with him. However, a return to Minnesota should come soon. Following the move back to Minnesota, he can begin rehabilitation towards a hopeful return to football in the future.
Following the surgery, Cine also posted on social media expressing gratitude for all the thoughts and prayers from fans as well as the medical staff that has been treating him.
Cine was drafted 32nd overall out of Georgia by the Vikings this spring after they traded down from No. 12 to No. 32 with the Detroit Lions. He started two of the three preseason games this August and overall played well. He recorded four tackles in the two games, and his superb athleticism was evident all over the field.
That said, Cine could not break onto the field for the defense with Cam Bynum and Harrison Smith as the consensus starters. Even when Smith sat out Week 3 with a concussion, it was Josh Metellus who started in Smith’s place.

Obviously, 2022 will go down as a frustrating season for the rookie safety, but the focus should remain on his health. It is going to be a long road to recovery, but if he can complete his rehab smoothly, 2023 should be a nice bounce back year for Cine.
