Dolphins Name Their Starting QB vs. Vikings

With Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater both still on the road to recovery from their concussions in back-to-back weeks, head coach Mike McDaniels announced that the Dolphins starting QB vs. the Minnesota Vikings will be rookie seventh-round pick Skylar Thompson.
The Kansas State product came into the game against the New York Jets last weekend and completed 55.6% of his passes for 166 yards and an interception in Miami’s 40-17 loss. For a breakdown on some of the attributes of the rookie QB’s game, head over to VikingsTerritory.
The short synopsis on Thompson’s game is that he is a confident passer out of the pocket with some sneaky mobility; something that Ed Donatell has consistently struggled against throughout his career as a defensive coordinator.
Thompson played five years of college ball with the Kansas State Wildcats, passing for 7124 yards, 42 TDs, and 16 INTs. He also rushed for 1087 yards and 26 TDs, including 405 yards and 11 TDs in 2019 alone.

Of course, Thompson cannot be relied upon to win games in the long-term, at least not at this point in his career. Luckily for the Dolphins, it seems that both Bridgewater and Tua or on the road to recovery. Tua returned to the practice field on Wednesday to do some throwing, but both players, according to McDaniel, are not “ready to do any football-related stuff”.
As for the Vikings offense, they should have no problem carving up a Miami defense that comes into Week 6 ranked dead last in DVOA against the pass. The Vikings should find a way to win and head into their bye week at 5-1, but the question remains how well this defense will handle a mobile, backup QB: two criteria that have caused the Vikings trouble in the past.
