It all started when Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said a few days ago that the Vikings didn’t have a Tom Brady or a Patrick Mahomes. Obviously, that statement was true, but people began to wonder how much faith the Vikings GM actually had in their QB Kirk Cousins thus forming doubts within the fan base once again. Since then, the controversies surrounding Cousins have only continued to get stranger as training camp gets under way.

Yesterday brought about the granddaddy of all strange controversies. Justin Jefferson revealed that he and other Vikings receivers had gone to South Florida over the summer to get some extra work in. Jefferson mentioned that he had invited Cousins to come with them, but he declined the invite to be with his family and to throw passes to high school kids in his hometown of Holland, Michigan.

Some people in Vikings fandom seemed to get a bit irked at the idea that Cousins turned down the invite to go with them, and it caused Jefferson to take to Twitter to form his own response in defense of his QB.

Even the official Vikings account got into the action. In the midst of the furious typing amongst hundreds of fans, the team dropped this little touchdown pass from Cousins to Jefferson that the receiver retweeted as well.

At the end of the day, this “issue” of Cousins not going to Florida is very much a non-issue in my opinion. It would be one thing if Cousins showed up to camp out of shape and out of sync with his receivers, but all reports are that he is locked in and has performed very well in both OTAs and to this point in training camp.

On top of that, Cousins did actually get together with his receivers this March in Minnesota for extra work. He posted a photo of Adam Theilen, KJ Osborn, and himself out on the field on his Instagram page, so clearly this isn’t an issue of Cousins not enjoying spending time with his receivers.

Like Jefferson said, this whole situation is being blown wildly out of proportion. Could Cousins have taken the trip and potentially brought his family with him to Florida for a vacation? Sure. Does his not doing so mean he isn’t committed to winning? Absolutely not.
