The Eagles Tried to Snatch Former Vikings QB

The Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles have been in the same circles for a couple weeks now. In addition to the trade between the two teams that sent 2020 first-round pick Jalen Reagor to Minnesota, it seems that the Eagles also tried to snatch a former Vikings QB off of waivers. On their way towards forming their 53-man roster, the Vikings waived Kellen Mond in addition to releasing Sean Mannion.

This move wasn’t all-too unexpected considering that Minnesota had recently traded to acquire Nick Mullens. Because of that, it is reasonable that a few teams were anticipatedly waiting for Minnesota to cut the young Mond so they could smash that waiver claim button. It turns out that, while the Cleveland Browns ultimately landed the QB, multiple teams had tried to grab him, including the Eagles.
This is a bit surprising considering where Philadelphia sits with the QB room. Jalen Hurts is a young, promising starter that has continued to grow. On top of that, they arguably have the best backup quarterback in the league in Gardner Minshew.
That said, it’s clear that Philly wanted to have a third young QB on their roster, given that as soon as Mond went off the table, they snatched former Saints QB Ian Book off waivers. Book was a 2021 fourth-round selection by the Saints, and he started one game last year after all three of Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, and Trevor Siemian went down with injuries.
Ultimately, Mond likely ended up in a better situation for his career trajectory by landing with the Browns. Deshaun Watson may end up being the starter, but the possibility that Mond may end up being a starter someday is getting bleaker by the day. At least in Cleveland, he looks to have a continuing chance at becoming the backup, especially this season while Jacoby Brissett is the starter. In Philly, he would have been trapped in a QB3 hole with seemingly no way out.
