Q: I saw where a few local media outlets insist the Vikings need a different backup quarterback. Who could they sign?
A: The list is slim; it’s too late in the offseason cycle to find many reliable QB2s.
So, this is the list of available reservist quarterbacks:
- Blake Bortles
- Mike Glennon
- Colin Kaepernick
- A.J. McCarron
- Cam Newton
- Kyle Sloter
And aside from Newton, it might be best just to roll with Mond and deal with the fallout in the heat of the moment, if any. The Vikings don’t necessarily need another quarterback — Kirk Cousins has never missed a game to injury — but if they want one, it’ll be slim pickings.
Q: Do you expect the Vikings to play any starters on Sunday versus the Raiders?
A: Well, Kirk Cousins is ill with some sort of illness, so he isn’t likely to play.
And last year, Sean McVay didn’t play any starters at all in the preseason, and that’s the team Kevin O’Connell last coached. If you’re tuning into Sunday’s game to see starters, you’d better find a different angle. Watching camp battles come to life and scouting unsung players might be a better plan.
We’ll say starters hardly play at all.
Q: Will Ed Ingram start Week 1?
A: Ingram is certainly beginning to experience some first-team reps. At some point, he will be a starting guard for the Vikings, but Week 1 might be a bit premature.
Jesse Davis should be considered the frontrunner to start the season at RG, evidenced by Vikings June minicamp and, of course, training camp.
However, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if Ingram gets the nod. You should hope for it, in fact.
