Since taking over as GM, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has made several decisions that suggest he’s willing to stick to his guns.

During the draft, Adofo-Mensah traded down in the opening round. Doing so was a decision that came with a fair bit of criticism (I’ve certainly articulated my belief that he got far too little for dropping down so far). Regardless, he believed that the best move was to accumulate more picks rather than stay at 12. He knew there would be criticism and yet he made the decision anyhow. On the next day, he pulled off a trade with the Packers to drop down once again.

Not too long ago, we heard rumors about Kyle Rudolph wanting to come back to Minnesota. We could all see how the tight end position is one that needs some reinforcements since an Irv Smith injury – which has occurred – means the team is working with unproven players. The rumors indicated that there was mutual interest between the team and Rudolph. Rather than sign the veteran, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah watched him go to the Bucs, suggesting that the GM and player must have had different ideas for a contract. Indeed, if the rumors about shared interest were true, then the holdup was likely a disagreement about a fair deal.

Rudolph then went on to sign with the Bucs. His deal carries a $1.97 million cap hit.

More recently, we’ve seen Ndamukong Suh connected to the Vikings. Apparently, there is a discrepancy between what the player is asking for and what the team is willing to offer. Suh would join Dalvin Tomlinson, Harrison Phillips, and Armon Watts. Combined, the DTs would form an underrated, strong rotation on the interior of Minnesota’s defensive line. The appeal is obvious, especially given some of the uncertainty surrounding the health of the two main edge rushers. Again, though, we’re seeing Adofo-Mensah stick to his guns. If the reports are true, then both sides have interest in each other. Minnesota’s GM isn’t willing to offer a deal he feels is unwise, though.

It would be tremendously difficult to succeed as an NFL GM without a strong vision and the willingness to bring it fruition. The job largely consists of making really challenging decisions. Making the decisions even more challenging is the pressure that comes from the fans.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has navigated the initial challenges of the being the Vikings’ GM with aplomb. I’m sure he has made some decisions that will end up going poorly, but he has almost certainly made plenty of other moves that will work out really well. Throughout all of this, he has demonstrated the willingness to pursue the path that he believes is best for the organization.
