Don’t Be Surprised if The Vikings Make an Addition or Two

The deadline for teams to get to the 53-man roster is Tuesday, August 30th. Minnesota, like the rest of the NFL’s teams, is thus involved in a difficult process of working through who will stay and who will go. In a lot of instances, the decisions are crystal clear: Kirk Cousins will be the one who throws the pass to Justin Jefferson as Christian Darrisaw protects the QB’s blindside.
The reality, though, is that there are plenty of spots that don’t offer nearly as much certainty.
Vikings fans have been monitoring some intense competitions for depth spots at offensive line, tight end, defensive line, edge rusher, middle linebacker, and corner (though there are a couple starter spots up for grabs). Last night’s Broncos game was the last chance for the coaching staff and front office to gather more evidence in their evaluation of the players.
Understandably, the majority of our current focus is on the subtractions. We mustn’t forget, though, that this period can also be a time when teams make an addition(s).
Earlier, we speculated about trading for some punt return help. That possible remains, but trading isn’t the only avenue for adding players. Plenty of talented players are going to get cut. It’s possible Minnesota thinks one of them is capable of contributing toward winning football games.
Resources aren’t infinite, but the team does have some money to spend. Heading into the Denver game, the Vikings had more than $10 million in cap space, per Over the Cap. There is enough room there for Kwesi Adofo-Mensah to make an addition or two, especially if the deal is for someone who will be filling a depth role.
Sometimes, we mistake the deadline for the 53-man roster as the date when the Minnesota roster is totally set. While most of the work has been done to form the roster, the team will remain a work in progress. The Vikings may believe it’s beneficial to make an addition if the right player(s) becomes available, so keep an eye on how things develop over the coming days.
