Vikings Put Alexander Mattison on COVID-19 List, Claim Wayne Gallman

The Vikings offense has gotten enough bad news in recent weeks, but apparently the football gods just aren’t done with Minnesota yet. Monday afternoon, the Vikings announced that they have placed both Alexander Mattison and Dan Chisena on the COVID-19 list. Then as a response, they claimed RB Wayne Gallman off waivers from Atlanta.
This news comes on the heels of Dalvin Cook’s return from a torn labrum, in which he rushed for over 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Apparently Cook is just built different and is able to overcome a rather serious injury in a matter of 10 days, but the loss of Mattison will sting the Vikings offense. He’s as talented an RB2 as any in the entire NFL, and he can handle the burden of a starter’s touch load.
Making matters worse, it seems that Mattison is unvaccinated, so per NFL protocols, he has to quarantine for 10 days. That means he is unable to rejoin the team until the middle of next week, leaving him as a scratch for Monday night’s game in Chicago.

This is a game that the Vikings need to win if they are going to have any hope of making the playoffs, and going into Soldier Field shorthanded makes that difficult.
As for Gallman, he joins the Vikings after playing in just six games for Atlanta this season. In those games, he’s rushed 28 times for 104 yards while also adding a reception for 21 yards. It’s been a disappointing season for Gallman, no doubt, but he’s proven to be a serviceable back in the past. In 2020 for the New York Giants, Gallman played 15 games, starting 10, while putting up 682 yards and six TDs in the wake of Saquon Barkley’s injury. We’ll see if he can turn back the clock for the Vikings this week.
